AASU to hold Latino Heritage Week

Armstrong Atlantic State University’s Hispanic Outreach and Leadership Program at Armstrong (HOLA) will hold its annual Latino Heritage Week program Sept. 23-27. The 2013 celebration will include a gallery talk, a film screening and the always-popular concert that closes the festival. Events are free and open to the public and held on the Armstrong campus, 11935 Abercorn St.

The schedule of events includes:

Monday, Sept. 23
Noon
International Art Exhibition Gallery Talk
Ogeechee Theatre, Armstrong Student Union
HOLA and Armstrong’s Department of Art, Music, and Theatre are partnering on the new faculty and student exhibition, “Un Tejido de Nuestras Culturas” (A Fabric of our Cultures): Art and Community in Argentina. Rachel Green, Armstrong professor of art, will discuss the exhibition and the Argentinean indigenous community of General Enrique Mosconi, near Salta, Argentina.

Tuesday, Sept. 24
11:30 a.m.
Film Screening
Ogeechee Theatre, Armstrong Student Union
Armstrong Latino Heritage Week will feature a special screening of “No,” a film by Pablo Larrain, starring Gael Garcia Bernal. In 1988, Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, due to international pressure, is forced to call a plebiscite on his presidency. The country will vote YES or NO to Pinochet extending his rule for another eight years. Opposition leaders for the NO persuade a brash young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra (Gael Garcia Bernal), to spearhead their campaign.

Concert
Armstrong Student Union Ballroom
The festival wrap-up concert will feature Xperimento, the Latin reggae-urban soul band that will bring awesome beats for dancing.
