Off-duty cop foils burglary at a business

Posted By on Fri, Feb 20, 2015 at 3:49 PM

An off-duty officer en route to his tour of duty "foiled a burglary this morning when he responded to 911 calls and found a suspect in a business," police say.

The West Chatham Precinct sergeant responding to a citizen’s call found a pickup truck partially in the roadway and a shattered front door to O’Reilly Auto Parts on the 4100 block of Ogeechee Road at 6:10 a.m.

Hamilton William Smith, 22, of a Brittlewood Court address, was located in the building.

"It was determined that he also had entered a truck that was parked nearby and he had taken the pickup in the roadway without permission," police say.

Smith has been charged with burglary, entering auto and auto theft.

Detectives from the West Chatham Precinct of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department continue to investigate.
