Chatham County Corrections Officer Brian Dunn was terminated and arrested March 10 on a theft by taking charge.

Last Sunday a citizen found a lost wallet at a local gas station and brought it to the Sheriff’s Office and turned it in to Officer Dunn for safe keeping. Officer Dunn removed some of the items and took the wallet home.

"When the owner of the wallet came to the Sheriff’s Office it was discovered that the wallet had not been turned in," said public informations officer Peter Nichols of the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.

During an internal investigation Officer Dunn admitted to taking the contents for his personal use which included an undisclosed amount of money. He was immediately arrested and terminated on the charge of theft by taking. He had been employed at the Sheriff’s Office for approximately two years.

While there is plenty of worry about how violent crime will affect tourism, the real concern is how it will affect the decision of residents whether or not to stay. The idea of leaving for a more safe locale seems almost inconceivable to those of us who’ve invested many years and whole lifetimes here. But Savannah’s just like anyplace else— people and businesses can decide it’s just not worth it anymore.
