Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Accident Investigations Team (MAIT) responded to Bay and Lincoln streets, where a Clermont, Florida, bicyclist was fatally injured in a vehicular accident involving a dump truck at about 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 11.

"Bicyclist, Judy Grossman, 61, was participating in a Bike Ride Across Georgia (BRAG) tour. Grossman was riding in the right east bound lane of Bay Street on her Lite Speed Road Bike," police say.

"At the same time, Alexis Montero Corvea, 32, was passing the group of bicyclists in the left lane of East Bay Street in a 1999 Ford Dump Truck. The front tire of Grossman’s bicycle went into a separation in the concrete. As a result, she fell in front of the dump truck’s rear tires and was run over," police say.

Grossman was transported from the scene to Memorial University Medical Center where she died. No other injuries were reported. This collision remains under review.

While there is plenty of worry about how violent crime will affect tourism, the real concern is how it will affect the decision of residents whether or not to stay. But Savannah’s just like anyplace else— people and businesses can decide it’s just not worth it anymore.
