Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Chief Michael Berkow announced his resignation this afternoon, less than three years after moving here from a controversial stint with the Los Angeles Police Department.

While Berkow said he is moving back to California to be closer to his son, he also said he will be president and chief operating officer of a new division of Altegrity, an international private security firm.

Berkow's former boss at the LAPD, William Bratton, will be the new division's CEO.

Berkow will stay on the job in Savannah until October.
