@ Red. The HSF has slid rapidly downhill. There was a time when their word and advice had a bit of weight here, but no longer. Now they are a group of tea-drinkers and garden party clacks, dressing in their Walmart finest for the next "big" meeting which goes nowhere and produces nothing at all.
SCAD isn't the "savior of Savannah." As this story shows, they are the destroyers of Savannah. They run an authoritarian, autocratic regime and think the rest of us are their yes-boys and handmaidens. They are getting over big-time on the property owners here by paying zero taxes on the buildings they own. (Not that it would really do so much good if they did pay. The rats at city hall would squander their supposed tax money just as they squander all the money they do take in now.)
Now it is at the point where the SCAD proconsuls think "we" are on "their" campus.
The public contributed the lion's share of the funds needed to restore the Lucas. You can still see the paving bricks with the names of some of the donors on them out front.
Then, a few years after the big re-opening, another frantic call went out: the roof needed a total upgrade, to the tune of many thousands more dollars. Of course anyone with their head screwed on right would have repaired the roof first before squandering donated money on the interior. At the Lucas, it was done backwards. But again, local people stepped up and finally the money was raised to repair or really replace, the roof. As a layman I am not sure how SCAD then gained control over this building put back in shape by public donations, but probably something should be done to wrest it out of their grasp.
I imagine the current plan is to allow it to stay vacant for a while, then put out another urgent call for donations to put it right (again,) then turn it into a hotel, much like these other hotels that are popping up like poison mushrooms all over downtown. PS: now that they have blocked off the view of the river with ugly, bulky hotels--a view that residents had since 1733, they are going to put signs up telling people how to get there. That is like the signs along Victory Drive ordering motorists not to create a wake. If this isn't the funny farm, I don't know what is.
Right on, Sista! I broke a front-tooth veneer a couple of months ago on a jelly bean. Felt like I was in a L'il Abner comic strip until I could get to a dentist. I wanted another veneer, but he said a crown was needed.
Now I have had to hire myself out as a galley slave to pay him.
If you want to pass by and glance at the layout of the properties there, you had better take your snorkel, your swim trunks and frog-flippers, and underwater eye mask.
They want to sell this boondoggle off to unsuspecting suckers, make a quick buck, and go back to wherever they came from, laughing all the way to the bank. I have seen that land underwater many times in my life, and I go back to the old Coke Field days, when even that was a knee-high wading pool. This is one of the biggest frauds and ripoffs I think I have ever seen, and living here, I have seen many!
The gang at city hall is instigating this ripoff because they are miffed that nobody (or not enough people, as they see it,) will use those ugly parking barns they have built all over the downtown area.
Out-of-towners know nothing of them, and residents know full well they are unsafe and dangerous night or day and that if they are used, that means a good long stroll home, another serious hazard here, albeit mostly at night, since no one seems interested a whit in controlling the rampant violent crime we all must endure here.
It doesn't matter what they "say" or what sort of spin they try to put on this, it is a blatant way to try and squeeze more money out of the public and extend the time in which they can issue tickets, place their parking "boots," and tow whenever they feel like it.
This gives the high school dropouts who "staff" the parking scheme here more time to be even more arrogant and rude than they are now if that is possible. Likely one of the two city managers we have here now--the one who sometimes comes in to work, and the other one who gets our property tax money for doing absolutely nothing came up with this scam. My money is on the one who often goes on TV spouting his crackpot ideas. These parking programs--long hours, weekend tickets, and increased rates--are popular in Florida. Either he lived there once or he has met with Florida CMs who have told him what a money windfall it will bring in.
And since we are talking about money, how about a public accounting of all the parking funds they rake in every year? That would be tickets, fines, boots, the whole pot o' gold they are nestling on. But I'll wait for that.
