Grayson Stadium looking for bands

Local artists sought for outdoor, pre-game gigs

What do famed country songwriter Willie Nelson and local Neo-Southern pop-rockers WormsLoew have in common?

They’ve both played Grayson Stadium.

True, Willie appeared on a giant stage on the ball field proper on a double bill with Bob Dylan that drew thousands of fans from all around, while WormsLoew played a decidedly smaller-scale set a few years back on the grounds of the historic baseball venue, but for both acts, it was great exposure in front of a wide variety of listeners.

Now, all manner of local musicians have a chance to score themselves a similar spot.

The Savannah Sand Gnats have just put out a call for bands interested in entertaining their ticket holders as they arrive at the stadium for upcoming 2009 season games — and since over 100,000 fans came showed up this past season, it’s a great opportunity for up-and-coming artists to get their music out to a fresh audience of all-ages.

Here’s how it works: bands who are selected will play for between 45 minutes and an hour on the plaza in front of Grayson Stadium starting at a little before 6 pm, when the gates open for 7 pm ball games. They’ll also be allowed to set up merchandise tables to sell or give away shirts, stickers, CDs, etc...

"All styles of music are welcome" for these Thursday, Friday and Saturday night performances, says Sand Gnats Director of Media Relations and Creative Services Mike Passanisi — provided the material and demeanor of the artists is “family-friendly. He also notes that it’s entirely possible thousands of people each night could hear (and possibly buy) the music of these local artists.

Interested? For more info, get in touch with Tara Vaglica at 351-9150, or e-mail Passanisi at mikep@sandgnats.com — and tell ‘em you heard about it at ConnectSavannah.com...
