Summertime isn't exactly known as the most sizzling season in community theater, but here in Savannah thespians never sleep. So check it out.
Timothy Reynolds' Midsummer Night's Play Festival returns to Muse Arts Warehouse June 15 and 16. If you can write, produce, direct, cast and perform an original play in a 24-hour period, here's your shot! Write to Reynolds at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Opening this very week on the Savannah Children's Theatre mainstage is The Music Man, cast as always with both adults and young people. It runs from June 8 until the 24th.
Here's a quick peek at the community theater plays currently scheduled for the coming hot months:
Bay Street Theatre is doing Bug, Tracy Letts' psycho-thriller, June 22-July 1 at Club One. John Macaluso directs the dark and twisted tale of a cocktail waitress named Agnes, and her relationship with Peter, a paranoid (and quite likely crazy) Gulf War veteran.
What the Butler Saw. Collective Face director David I.L. Poole helms this classic ‘60s British sex farce by Joe Orton, Aug. 3-18 at Muse Arts Warehouse. It's about naughty things going on inside an upper-crust mental ward.
The Masquers of Armstrong Atlantic State University continue their ongoing Shakespeare program with a production of Love's Labor's Lost July 12-22 at the Jenkins Hall auditorium.
Avenue Q. The famously foul-mouthed "adult" parody of Sesame Street, directed by Jeff DeVincent (Cabaret), is Bay Street's next show, Aug. 9-26 at Club One. Yes, it's a puppet musical.
Hammond B3 organist Tony Monaco headlines the Coastal Jazz Associations 2012 Savannah Jazz Festival. The event is Sept. 23-30, with Monaco and his band scheduled to rip it up in the 8:15 p.m. slot Sept. 29, on the Forsyth Park stage. See the entire schedule at savannahjazzfestival.org.
