Florence Margaret Martus, sister of the Elba Island lightkeeper, was honored with a monument in Morrell Park on the River Front. Ms. Martus waved to all vessels going in and out of the Savannah harbor for forty-four years. The bronze statue of Ms. Martus is one and one-half times life size, cast in one piece and is mounted on a slanted platform with a bronze collie dog.
A ship's lantern is also part of the ensemble, which is on a polished black Swedish granite base, eleven feet square.
This is the first memorial to a Georgia woman in any city park.
