Carroll Brown

Mature, S.C.-based singer/songwriter playing acoustic folk/pop he terms “Coastal Country.” Mon. - Tues., Kevin Barry’s. 

The Seth Carper Group

This multi-instrumentalist plays alto, tenor, soprano, and baritone saxes and many other wind instruments. He teaches sax at the university level and is a member of the famed Christian Tamburr’s quartet. Expect 3 sets each night. Fri. - Sat., 9 pm, Kokopelli’s Jazz Club. 

Mark Carter

Local guitarist/singer playing popular covers and originals. Thurs., 6 pm, Tubby’s (River St.). 

Chris Chandler

Jazz and pop pianist who’s released a handful of indie CDs and toured abroad. For these shows he’ll be playing tunes by everyone from Frank Sinatra to Elton John. Fri. - Sat., 7 pm, Vic’s on The River.

Chief

Longtime area singer/guitarist who can famously play thousands of rock, pop, country and blues songs on demand. Wed. - Thurs., 9 pm, Bayou Café + Sat., 9 pm, Augie’s Pub (Richmond Hill).

The Chuck Courtenay Band

Modern and classic country and Southern rock covers, plus a few original tunes from veteran local players. Fri. - Sat., 8 pm, Tubby’s (Thunderbolt).  

Courtenay Brothers Band

This lineup unites both Chuck and Jason Courtenay, two singing guitarists who front their own groups, which focus on similar types of popular country and rock tunes. Thurs., 9 pm, Wild Wing Café.

Mary Davis & Co.

Pop, rock and soul cover tunes. Thurs., 7 pm, Baja Cantina (The Landings).

Deep Blue 3

Deep Cuts

Fairly eclectic regional cover band, specializing in classic rock, from Pink Floyd to the Allman Brothers to CCR. Fri., 9 pm, Jukebox Bar & Grill (Richmond Hill). 

Dope Sandwich Productions

This group of local DJs, MCs, Breakers and  Hip-hop heads (including DJ Life, Vallis, Scandalous, Kid Psycho, Basiclly and Lyrix) are showing up increasingly around downtown, and appealing to a much wider variety of folks than many other area turntablists and rappers. Fri. (9:30 pm) & Sun. (8:30 pm), Tantra Lounge.   The Robbie Ducey Band

Southern Ga.-based modern electric blues group led by singing guitarist Ducey. Their pop-leaning arrangements are a bit reminiscent of late-period Stevie Ray Vaughan. Fri., 10 pm, Savannah Blues. 

Eat Mo’ Music

Savannah’s only combo specializing in soul-jazz — instrumental grooves ranging from their own interpretations of standards to jazzy treatments of rock, soul and pop hits. Sat., 9 pm, Jazz’d Tapas Bar.

Singing acoustic guitarist offering Celtic tunes and popular favorites. Wed. - Sun., Kevin Barry’s.

The Georgia Fire Band

Southern rock and country covers. Fri. - Sat., 9 pm, Red Leg Saloon (formerly the Silver Dollar Bar & Grill, Hwy 204). 

Jon Doe

Local funk cover band (think Curtis Mayfield, P-Funk). Fri. - Sat., 9 pm, Fiddler’s Crab House (River St.). 

Jordon

New area rapper who says his rhymes will “fill up your scalp like dandruff.” Thurs., 10:30 pm, Club Ice.

Listen 2 Three

Tight, young local trio citing John Mayer, Phish and Dave Matthews as key influences. Their demo is most impressive, and they seem a promising addition to then local original music scene. Sat., 10:30 pm, Shamrock’s (Wilmington Isl.). 

Lurid Miscreants

Original metal power trio featuring Brian “Ragman” Dingess. Thurs., 10 pm, Wind Rose Café (Tybee).

Maurice & Doubleday

Popular covers in a wide variety of styles from a longtime fixture on the local club and party circuit. Fri., 8 pm, Mary’s Seafood & Steaks. 

Eddie Mercer

Blues, rock and pop covers and originals from a solo singer/guitarist. Fri. - Sat., 7 pm, Stingray’s (Tybee).

Mr. Wiley

New local jam-band that’s centered around a well-oiled rhythm section. Fri., 10 pm, Locos Deli & Grill (downtown).

Old-Time Jam Session

Experienced acoustic musicians and newbies play together on pre-commercialized country and mountain songs. Mon., 7:30 pm, The Sentient Bean - ALL-AGES. 

The Howard Paul Trio

One of the area’s finest jazz guitarists (a 7-string, no less) holds down a regular Monday night residency at this way-cool supper club on the resort island. Mon., 8 pm, The Jazz Corner (Hilton Head).

Phantom Wingo

Muscular jam-band with a solid foundation in Southern rock and blues. Expect plenty of scalding lead guitar, and soulful vocals. Thurs., 10 pm, Fiddler’s Crab House (Southside) + Fri., 8:30 pm, Augie’s (Richmond Hill). 

Radio Cult

Campy, cornball ‘80s cover band from Atlanta that dresses up in checkerboard spandex, parachute pants and skinny ties to play a wide variety of hair metal, new wave, rock and pop hits. They’re popular on the Southeastern bar and frat party circuit. Fri., Wild Wing Café.

Shorty Cooper

Local electric blues combo featuring Texas-bred frontman/guitarist Landon Spradlin. Sat., 8 pm, The Warehouse. 

Randy “Hatman” Smith

Acoustic guitarist playing beach, boogie and blues tunes to sequenced backing. Wed., 5 pm, Dolphin Reef Lounge (Tybee) + Fri. - sat., 7 pm, Stingray’s (Tybee). 

Gail Thurmond

Delightful jazz pianist and vocalist. Catching her gigs has become almost a requirement for visitors seeking one of the few “old Savannah” traditions that remain.  Tues. - Sun., 7 pm, Planter’s Tavern (below The Olde Pink House Restaurant). 

Toward The Son

Solid, new, regional Christian hard-rock/metal band. Mon., 6 pm, Coaches Corner (Thunderbolt) - ALL-AGES.

Greg Williams
