New York Disco Villains, Pussy Launcher @The Jinx

A “multimedia carnival rock extravaganza,” New York Disco Villains may seem fresh outta the Coney Island Sideshow, but they’re actually from a place perhaps even weirder, wilder, and more bewilderingly inspiring than that neon peninsula: Columbia, South Carolina.

The four-piece, comprised of vocals, keys, drums, and guitar, lands somewhere on a spectrum anchored by the B-52s and They Might Be Giants: think delightful absurdity, whimsical, circus-inspired keys, steeped in B-movies for a fortnight.

Pussy Launcher is a newish project from Nicole Edge and Ty Watkins (both of SAV surf group The Wave Slaves) and Alexandra Mitchell. Mitchell and Edge were bandmates in garage-punk trio Free Candy a few years back; their reunion marks a return to Free Candy’s penchant for irreverence and zany fun. Guitarist Watkins’ history with Atlanta ska band Hermits of Suburbia brings its own flair—the songs are punchy, goofy, and certainly not for the easily offended.
