Dog Days
A group of dog lovers is circulating a petition requesting that the City consider converting the Nathaniel Greene Park on Bull Street between 56th St. and Columbus Avenue into an off-leash dog park.
Petition circulators contend that the park is currently under-utilized and could serve as a great spot for dogs to get exercise and socialize. There are currently two smaller dog parks within City limits, the Savannah Dog Park in Starland and the Mother Beasley Dog Park on East Broad Street at Taylor.
Supporters plan to present the petitions to the Mayor and Council at an upcoming meeting, but hope the city officials will see the potential benefits for pets.
"Designated dog parks ensure the safety of both canines and people and provide the dogs with pack socialization and exercise, reducing negative behaviors in the home, and ultimately keeping canines out of our already over-crowded animal control shelter and local rescues," says Lisa Scarborough, founder of Coastal Pet Rescue.
An increase in pets and their owners could also be a boon for nearby businesses.

Rock N Run
After a groundswell of excitement late last summer following the announcement of Savannah as a host city for the popular Rock N Roll Marathon series, there hasn't been much news - maybe everyone was too busy training.
With about six months to go before the local debut, the excitement is mounting once again for a party to unveil the race course. Tuesday, April 26 Fleet Feet Sports will host the announcement event from 6-8 p.m. at their location at 3405 Waters Ave.
Attendees will be among the first to see the route, and will also be eligible for a discount on their registration fees. Jog over for a chance to meet Rock ‘n' Roll staff, catch video highlights of other events from the series, ask questions and enter a raffle. Rock on.
Congressman on the corner
Whether it's the appeal of spring weather or a vacation from budget talks on Capital Hill, District 12 Representative John Barrow hasn't been a stranger to Savannah lately.
On Monday, April 18, the Congressman stopped at the Veranda at Midtown senior citizen home on Anderson Street to discuss potential changes to federal programs that aid the elderly.
On Thursday, April 21, the Congressman will make a stop at a mortgage workshop being held at the Civic Center from 3-7 p.m. that will provide information for homeowners who are at risk of losing their homes to foreclosure.
Taking Medicine
Armstrong Atlantic State University is participating in a national Take Back initiative sponsored by the Department of Justice and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
From April 25 through 30, residents can drop off unused or expired prescription medications anytime, 24 hours per day, at a secured collection box inside the AASU Police Department office located on campus at 11935 Abercorn St.
The initiative is part of an effort to curb prescription drug abuse in the United States. More than 7 million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according a 2009 survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration.
All drugs collected will be destroyed by the DEA. Pills and liquids only, no needles.
