Savannah Technical College honored Chef Jean Vendeville as the 2014 American Culinary Federation National Chef Educator of the Year this past week.
The award, established in 1998, pays tribute to an active culinary educator whose knowledge, skills and expertise has enhanced the image of the professional chef, and who, by example, has provided guidance to students seeking a career in the culinary profession.
Vendeville is a French native and has headed Savannah Tech’s culinary department since 2008.
His victory was announced at the awards celebration for the 2014 American Culinary Federation National Competition held in Kansas City. In April of this year, Vendeville was named best culinary educator in the Southeast at a Charleston event.
“Being able to share my knowledge with the next generation of chefs is most important to me,” said Vendeville.
“I train my students to be successful in culinary arts and perhaps someday to surpass me as leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs and instructors in the culinary profession. I thank my students for believing in me and following me every day.”
For the competition, Vendeville had 50 minutes to present a lecture and demonstration for a panel of judges on triumphed over regional winners from the West (the Art Institute of Tucson), Northeast (State University of New York Cobleskill) and the Central (Pulaski Technical College in Little Rock, Ark.)
Blowin' Smoke marks IPA Day
Blowin’ Smoke Southern Cantina, 1611 Habersham St. will hosting—along with Red Hare Brewing Company—a celebration for National IPA Day, August 7, 5-9 p.m. The event showcases Red Hare’s Gangway IPA.
There is no admission fee for the event; food and drinks are available for purchase within the restaurant. The area rep for Red Hare will be on hand slinging prizes & dropping some craft beer knowledge. And yes, there’s a Cornhole tournament!
Art to Table reception is Friday
Local artists Lisa Bradley, Jessica Broad, Mitzi Davis, and Rebecca Sipper are back together with Art to Table, an art show featuring the latest in their functional ceramics work. The artists are pushing viewers “to imagine the intersection of fine art exhibition and dinner party.”
The artwork will be taken off the walls, and placed on the dinner table. Bradley, Broad, Davis, and Sipper create their artwork “with the intention of their owners loving to use each piece. Therefore, this show intends to break through the traditional boundaries perceived between fine art and functional.”
The opening reception for Art to Table is Friday, August 8, 6-9 p.m. at Whit’s End Gallery, 106 East 37th St. Art to Table’s e-gallery and shop will remain open through September 8
Cookin' with herbs, baby
UGA Extension Family & Consumer Sciences Agent Jackie Ogden will hold a workshop teaching you how to use and preserve herbs for your garden. The event happens Tues., Aug. 20, 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m., at the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens at the Historic Bamboo Farm, 2 Canebrake Rd. Participants will receive publications, recipes and food preservation information.
