The Blotter

An officer followed a pickup truck onto Interstate 16 after observing the driver turn left onto Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard from the right lane of Bay Street. The officer then saw the driver repeatedly cross the dividing line several times.

The vehicle approached an exit ramp at a high rate of speed and the driver slammed on the brakes to make the ramp. The officer initiated a traffic stop and approached the driver’s side of the vehicle.

The woman inside did not look at the officer, but flicked the ashes from her cigarette, nearly striking the officer with the cigarette. The driver handed the officer her license and registration.

The officer advised her why she was being stopped and she said she was trying to get home but was lost. The officer noticed the woman’s speech was slurred and asked her to step outside of the vehicle.

The woman was unsteady on her feet and had to steady herself using the door of the truck. The officer told the woman what he had observed and asked her why she was driving like that.

“Well, honestly, I have no idea where the hell I’m going,” she said. “To be honest with you, these girls in the car with me, they’re directing me. That’s all I know. I’m following what they are telling me. That’s all.”

The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the woman’s breath. He asked her how much she’d had to drink. She replied, “I’ve had about, ummm, two beers, about four beers.”

The woman was asked to submit to the standardized field sobriety tests and agreed. The officer observed her swaying during the test and saw that her eyes were glassy and bloodshot. The woman failed all the sobriety tests and was arrested for driving under the influence.
