Tibetan monks set to return

Posted on Wed, Jul 24, 2013 at 10:46 AM

The ever-popular monks of Drepung Loseling monastery return to the Jepson Center for the first time in over four years to create another incredible sand mandala.

Their weeklong residency is sponsored by the City of Savannah. The program will begin September 23 at 5pm with an opening ceremony of chants, followed by the drawing of the mandala. Visitors may watch the monks at work in the museum atrium during normal daytime museum hours September 24-28.

Along the way the museum will offer a lecture by the monks on Thursday evening, September 26 and two community sand painting activities for children. At the closing ceremony, the mandala will be destroyed and a portion of the sand will be distributed to the audience. The audience is invited to follow the monks to the Savannah River where the remaining sand from the mandala will be released.

Attendance for all events is free of charge and open to the public.
