Police investigate early morning gun incidents

Posted By on Thu, Aug 27, 2015 at 4:25 PM

Detectives are seeking information on "both a gun discharge and a shooting happening less than two hours apart early this morning," a department spokesperson says.

"Just after 1 a.m. Metro responded to 1000 block of West 36th Street, where gunshots were fired at a house," police say. "Present during the incident were residents Stanley Jackson, 57, Lateria Hamilton, 36, Charles Fields, 27, and a 14-year-old girl."

No one was injured. The suspect is unknown. Events leading up to the incident remain under investigation.

"At 2:45 a.m. Central Precinct patrol officers were dispatched to a shooting on the 700 block of East 39th Street, that originated as a ShotSpotter alert," police say.

"Police were rerouted to the 600 block of east 39th Street where shooting victim Timothy Mark Jones, 26, sought help. Jones was transported by ambulance to Memorial University Medical Center in serious but stable condition."

The male shooting suspect "may have fled the scene on foot, heading north. Investigators do not believe this to be a random act," police say.

Detectives later learned of an outstanding arrest warrant for Jones a for failure to comply with terms set by Drug Court.

"Preliminary investigation shows no links between these events," police say.

  • Editor's Note: The new normal of crime downtown

While there is plenty of worry about how violent crime will affect tourism, the real concern is how it will affect the decision of residents whether or not to stay. The idea of leaving for a more safe locale seems almost inconceivable to those of us who’ve invested many years and whole lifetimes here. But Savannah’s just like anyplace else— people and businesses can decide it’s just not worth it anymore.
