Juvenile suspect in gang-related City Market shooting/crash has criminal history

Savannah-Chatham Police Chief Joseph Lumpkin announced today that the suspect in custody for last night's tragic shooting/collision in the City Market is 17-year-old Jerry Chambers, who is no stranger to local law enforcement.

Chief Lumpkin says the incident last night was gang-related.

In June 2016, Chambers, who was then 16, turned himself in to police after being suspected of a robbery and shooting in Savannah Mall’s parking lot that left Marie Cochran, 63, with serious injuries.

At the time Chambers faced charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault. He was however released.

In the incident last night, Chambers allegedly shot into a crowd of people in City Market from a white SUV, injuring three. The vehicle was pursued by police, hitting four pedestrians and killing one before coming to a stop.

The pedestrian killed was Scott Waldrup, a manager at the downtown restaurant The Grey.

Two others in the SUV with Chambers died in the one-vehicle collision, police say.

A second shooting a few minutes later sent one man to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Chief Lumpkin says the victim of that shooting isn't cooperating with police, and police currently don't know if the two shootings are related.
