GLITTER AND GOLD: Special production celebrates diversity, empowering performers in Savannah’s burlesque scene

Updated June 21, 2023 at 2:28 p.m.

Magnolia Minxxx of The Savannah Sweet Tease Burlesque Revue is again presenting the show "Stay Gold | An All PoC Production," featuring a cast of Savannah’s leading entertainers.

"We are bringing the show of beautiful melanated people back to Savannah because it is needed. I wasn't seeing a lot of POC bodies being represented in a manner that I felt was important," said Magnolia Minxxx.

Magnolia Minxxx, a co-producer of The Savannah Sweet Tease Burlesque Revue, started “Stay Gold | An All PoC Production” in 2019 and has produced the show ever since, even doing a virtual show during COVID.

The event serves as a two-tier platform: one that provides a space for people of color to perform together and share unique stories, and two that introduces audiences local and far to POC performers in the arts of burlesque, drag, and more.

"It's not to say we don't adore performing amongst all our other peers, but it is a completely different feeling when you look around and see so many beautiful POC bodies being represented on one stage, bringing forth such beautiful messages. It’s great," said Magnolia Minxxx.

The show this year stars Corbin Monoxide, Magnolia Minxxx, Rita D'LaVane, Sallie Just Sallie, Arabica Black, and Chloe Adrenalize. Dick Cherry will be the emcee for the event.

"Some of these amazing performers have been with me and the show for years, and some are new. We invite other people from different groups to perform with us as well. If you are a POC performer, I'm going to reach out to you," said Magnolia Minxxx.

Chloé Adrenalize is from Tied & Tasseled, which is another Savannah-based burlesque troupe and cabaret that pairs traditional burlesque with a flare of fetish and rock n' roll. And Arabica Black is making her world burlesque debut at the show.

Magnolia Minxxx has been pleased with the response and reception of the show, from the audience to the performers.

"Shows like this are important because they highlight the talents of the people in the world of burlesque and shed light on the importance of Black people in burlesque," said one of the show's performers, Corbin Monoxide.

Corbin Monoxide has been performing for five years. They were always interested in burlesque but didn’t know how to get started. They went to a show the Savannah Sweet Tease was having, got involved, and the rest is history.

"When I first started dancing, I was very competitive, and ‘Stay Gold’ reminds me that burlesque is also a space for me to have fun and enjoy the talents of myself and my friends. We’re just a big, glittery family, and I love that," said Corbin Monoxide.

The glittery family will take the stage at Club One, a place Magnolia Minxxx says has been welcoming and open to this show from day one, providing a space for these performers to create and showcase different perspectives openly.

"I couldn't ask for more support. I couldn't be happier. At Club One they said, ‘You tell us when, and we're going to make sure there's availability for that kind of representation,’" said Magnolia Minxxx.

While the show does not have an official theme, there is one theme that is universal and present each year for a special reason, and that is in the title, "Stay Gold.’

"Look at royal rich blues, reds, and purples, mixed with gold as an accent. In different cultures, such as West Indian, African, and Haitian, these are royal colors. I find beautiful POC bodies to be of royalty. We needed to be treated like gold. We still do, and everyone does," said Magnolia Minxxx.

"Stay Gold | An All PoC Production" takes place on Thursday, June 22 at 8:30 p.m. at Club One. Tickets can be purchased at clubone.ticketleap.com.
