GET DOWN AND DERBY: Run for the Roses Returns

Updated April 26, 2023 at 12:38 p.m.

Pegasus Riding Academy is a local nonprofit that harnesses the healing power of horses to provide therapeutic services to individuals with physical, mental or emotional disabilities, and they’re gearing up for their annual signature event. Run for the Roses is a lively local Kentucky Derby party that rivals all others, complete with contests, refreshments and live horses. The exciting equine event is celebrating seven years at its current location, but the party has been happening since 2014.

The festive fundraiser will feature a riding demonstration from the Special Olympic Equestrian Team and an engaging guest talk on thoroughbred bloodlines. Attendees are encouraged to don their most dashing derby hats and fabulous fascinators to participate in the hat contest. There will also be a Dapper Dan contest to identify the best dressed partygoer.

Guests will be able to enjoy Derby-themed Southern cuisine and special libations to include Silver Goblet Mint Juleps and other delectable drinks from the Silverstream Bar. Regarding entertainment, Run for the Roses boasts the largest outdoor TV screen in town, ensuring that attendees have a spectacular view of the Kentucky Derby. And to top it off, award-winning songwriter and lead singer of the Train Wrecks Band, Jason Bible will be performing throughout the evening.

Further adding to the excitement is the silent auction, which features some outstanding items and opportunities like quail hunting and boating among others. One particularly buzzworthy auction item is a three-night stay at the house where the Netflix phenomenon “Stranger Things” was filmed.

Proceeds from the Run for the Roses party will support infrastructure upgrades and therapeutic programs offered by the academy. PRA is preparing to introduce a new immersion program for veterans, which attendees will hear more about at the event.

The Run for the Roses Kentucky Derby Party will be held on Saturday, May 6 from 4 to 8 p.m.  at Pegasus Riding Academy, which is located at 2500 Tennessee Avenue. Tickets and sponsorships are available online at prasav.org/.
