SCCPSS Savannah Holiday Classic Basketball Showcase Returns This Weekend

New format for basketball showcase this weekend

The eighth edition of a Savannah tradition will be different this year than in years past. The Savannah Holiday Classic returns on Friday, Dec. 15 and Saturday, Dec. 16 at several gyms across the city. Because of a change in format, the event is officially named “The 2023 SCCPSS Holiday Classic Basketball Showcase.”

Unlike past years, the classic in 2023 will be “showcase-style.” This means the schedule is predetermined and not set-up in a bracket-style which produces a “winner” of each bracket. Previously, brackets were split into four groups of teams, two girls and two boys. The brackets were named for Savannah’s squares (Washington, Crawford, Oglethorpe, etc.) in the years before this change was implemented. It’s a move which SCCPSS Athletics administrators hope will attract more talent from teams across the state and from outside Savannah.

Critics might argue it’s a Savannah tournament, and therefore it deserves to produce Savannah winners. But the Classic has always had teams coming from outside Savannah to compete. Last year, teams from Florida, Georgia and South Carolina were here to play.

With 13 games on Friday and 13 more on Saturday, the 2023 showcase has 26 chances to see good basketball.

On Day 1, Beach and Savannah High will host four games each while Woodville-Tompkins hosts three and Jenkins two. On Saturday, Beach has six games scheduled while Woodville has seven. Several top-10 matchups are on the slate for each night.
