A passion for pizza is something that unites us all. The crowd-pleasing pie is a staple of the American diet loved by just about everyone — except for Gregory Eddie from “Abbott Elementary,” but of course, he’s a fictional character and a rare exception. Here in Savannah, we enjoy pizza in a variety of ways: by the slice, New York-style, deep-dish, wood-fired, you name it. Because pizza is so beloved, our nation sets aside a special day to honor the almighty pie. National Pizza Day is Feb. 9, and we’re celebrating with a list of some of our favorite pizza places around town. Join in on the celebration and enjoy a slice or a whole pie from one of these local pizzerias.
Vinnie Van GoGo’s
Located on a City Market corner, Vinnie Van Gogo’s is the go-to for NY-style pizza. They serve thin-crust slices as big as your head with dough freshly made every night. Sauce options include traditional tomato, pesto or white. And you can customize your pizza with any of their standard or premium toppings. Dine on their spacious patio or place your order to go. One thing’s for sure, you’ll be delighted by their delicious pizza.
Basil’s Pizza and Deli
Basil’s has been locally owned and operated since 2000, serving up tasty pizzas that the whole family can enjoy. They make their dough and sauces daily and use the freshest produce to deliver maximum flavor. Options include personal, medium or large pizzas as well as calzones. Their menu features reimagined pies like their Shrimp Scampi, Gyro and Eggplant Parmesan pizzas. So, if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, Basil’s is the place for you.
Green Fire Pizza
Pooler’s pizza parlor, Green Fire is also a sports bar and grill and precisely where you want to be on game day. Their flavorful pizzas are lovingly made with slow-proofed dough, handmade sauces and fresh organic toppings in an authentic wood-burning oven. These aren’t your average, run-of-the-mill pizzas either. Their specialty pizzas are bold, with inventive options like their Lemon Chicken Cheddar, the Smokin’ Green Fire and the Fungi Madness pizzas among others. You can also order by the slice or create your own pie.
Vincenzo’s Pizzeria
Away from the hustle and bustle of downtown, you’ll find Vincenzo’s Pizzeria serving up hand-tossed pies in Savannah’s Southside. Vincenzo’s is another lauded local option for real NY pizza. They offer an exciting selection of specialty pizzas including their famous Big Vinny, The Cali, The Southside and more. Their menu has been newly updated, all the more reason to drop by soon.
Riverboat Pizza
Riverboat Pizza is a restaurant on the outskirts of town offering an impressive array of toothsome pizzas available in 10, 14 or 18-inch pies. Their specialty selection includes creative takes like the meaty River Monster, the lean and green Pesto Manifesto, the sweet and salty 1733 and several others. Visit their Ogeechee Road location to try their pies soon.
Graffito Pizza
Part of Plant Riverside District, Graffito Pizza is a relative newcomer to Savannah’s pizza scene. But in the few years of its existence, it has quickly become the place in town for authentic Neapolitan pizza. Their pizzas are artfully made with fine ingredients and cooked to perfection in state-of-the-art custom double pizza ovens. The menu includes classics like Pepperoni and Margherita as well as specialties like Il Giardino and The RCK. Whatever you decide on, you’re sure to enjoy it.
Screamin’ Mimi’s
Since 2007, Screamin’ Mimi’s has been serving hand-tossed pizzas from house-made dough baked pleasantly crisp in brick ovens. Screamin’ Mimi’s has earned its reputation as one of the best places for pizza in Savannah, and they show no signs of slowing down. Their menu includes all of the traditional favorites like Margarita, Hawaiian, Supreme, Meat Lovers and more. It’s unfussy, classic pies that are just darn good.
