Local Elections

In the most transformative election of modern Savannah history, a wave of reform in 2019 swept out nearly every incumbent on City Council, elevating one, longtime Alderman Van Johnson, to the Mayor’s position. (Estella Shabazz of the 5th District is the only remaining holdover.) While the mayoral race between Johnson and former Mayor Eddie DeLoach went to a runoff as is so often the case in Savannah, the contest was never really that close, and in the end Johnson won a convincing victory. However, the top vote-getter that election wasn’t Johnson, but instead an At-Large Alderwoman victor, Alicia Blakely. The resulting Council is the first in Savannah history with a majority of African American women.
