Sheriff's Deputy fired and arrested after assault investigation

In early February the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office "received a complaint from a former inmate claiming a deputy had improper contact with her during her incarceration. Internal Affairs launched an investigation into the matter," a Sheriff's Dept. spokesperson says.

The internal investigation "uncovered more victims and enough evidence to launch a separate criminal investigation by the Criminal Investigative Division."

Deputy Deon Gibson, was placed on administrative leave with pay. This week Gibson was terminated and charged with sexual assault with a person in custody and false statements and writings. He remains in the Chatham County Detention Center without bond until his arraignment.

Gibson had been employed with the CCSO for 13 years.
