Haybaby, Bethlehem Steel @El-Rocko Lounge

Savannah Stopover Music Festival attendees caught the delightful slop rock of Haybaby at the 2016 festival. The trio—Leslie Hong on vocals and guitar, Sam Yielf on bass, Jeremy Duvall on drums—keep it minimal with ominous bass and building high-hat hits before diving into grimy, sludgy abandon. Hong can have the crisp air of Metric’s Emily Haines in one moment, the guttural growl of Brody Dalle of The Distillers in the next; the balance is mesmerizing. Hear it on their 2016 Tiny Engines release, Sleepy Kids.

Haybaby is joined by fellow Brooklynites Bethlehem Steel. The trio specializes in a deftly-wielded kind of chaos, crafted with fuzzy guitars, full and perfectly immersive drums, and vulnerable lyricism. Bethlehem Steel released Party Naked Forever via Exploding in Sound Records in 2017.
