Sulfur Studios offers an easier way of building an art collection

DON’T PANIC, but Labor Day is this weekend, which means all the department stores are about to unearth their snow machines and evergreen wreaths.

Meanwhile, you’re just trying to plan your last beach day. Doesn’t this get earlier every year?

Don’t let the holiday buzz get you overwhelmed—Sulfur Studios is here to help you get a jump on it with their brand new Savannah Art Box.

The latest project out of the artistic powerhouse, the Savannah Art Box is packed full with pieces from local artists. The goods run the gamut from paintings and prints to books, CDs and keychains, all made by local artists that have been associated with Sulfur at some point.

“We’re trying to keep it in some ways Savannah-specific, so some of the content of the pieces is either about Savannah or the South,” explains Jennifer Moss.

“We also wanted to have a lot of different types of art as well. Art is not just a painting on the wall. The box includes paintings and prints, but we also have functional things.”

“It’s a project I’ve seen other places; it exists in a few different ways,” explains Moss. “I’ve seen an art box that’s multiple times a year, like a subscription service. I’ve had it in my mind to do something like this the last two years [Sulfur has] existed, but I keep having the idea too late in the year! It really makes sense to have it be available before the holidays, so when I finally remembered it this year in June, we made it happen.”

“If you don’t want to go shopping, we’ve shopped for you,” adds Emily Earl.

The Savannah Art Box is also an easy opportunity to build an art collection. As Moss and Earl both attest, getting into the process of collecting art can be intimidating for beginners.

Currently, the Savannah Art Box is available only by presale. The box is available in three tiers priced at $125, $250, and $500, respectively.

Tier One includes a signed copy of Morty and the Moon by Jose Lucio; a set of postcards from Emily Earl’s Late Night Polaroids series, an 8”x10” limited edition print by Alexis Javier, an enamel pin by Tittybats, a Flannery O’Connor-themed notebook by Holly Oddly, a signed copy of Don’t Go to the Porch by City Hotel, and a special edition Sulfur Studios T-shirt.

Tier Two includes all of Tier One’s items in addition to a signed copy of Savannah Sideways by Jessica Leigh Lebos ,a leather key fob by Fidler Supply, a ceramic mug by Rebecca Sipper, and a limited edition 16”x20” print by Xavier Hutchins.

Tier Thee includes all of the previous items as well as an original painting by Michael Mahaffey, an original fiber piece by Jennifer Moss, a hand-pulled reduction linoprint by Laurie Darby, and a wood pendant by Keeth Woodworking.

The boxes are available for purchase at sulfurstudios.org/savannah-art-box through Oct. 1. Sulfur will throw a release party Nov. 30 where boxes will be available for pickup.
