Jim, what an excellent piece of writing. Thank you. Makes me want to get two specific things: (1) Copy of the book, and of course (2) a double-dip cone of ANY flavor. I sometimes ask someone to give me a number between this and that, and then I count across and down the flavors on display until I land on one. Doesn’t matter which one!
Jillian comes across as a very together woman, and why not? Milwaukee home town (like me) probably a Packers fan, and (like me) found her way to Savannah, my favorite city! Great to find "Cheeseheads in Paradise".
Reactions will vary based on how one sees tourism in the economic future of Savannah, and if one considers it a pain in the butt, then one will be negative toward bachelorette weekends. But if one values tourism its easy to see bachelorette gatherings as a terrific marketing plus for Savannah tourism.
I have vacation rentals that are perfect for such gatherings, so we get several of them every year (same with Girl Scout troops). These are young women, and they have a tremendous time, without fail -- rain or shine, hot or cold, no matter.
What do I mean by marketing plus? Often, in the years following a bachelorette event, I take calls saying, in essence, I stayed at one of your places (we have multiple units on one lot) when Jane Doe had her bachelorette event in 20XX, and Im dying to come back with ... (fill in the blank, my husband and another couple, my two sisters and our three kids, my siblings for our parents' 40th wedding anniversary, etc. And so multiple follow up bookings are very common, albeit mostly a couple or even several years later.
When they return they are more mature and looking for a different experience than years before with their friends. Because of their time in Savannah with the bachelorette participants, they saw what Savannah has to offer, things they didnt have the time to fully appreciate that first time around. They become very effective spokespersons for the whole Savannah thing among their social groups and family members.
ry good commentary by Mr. Morekis; thank you, sir. Kudos to Van Johnson, Estella Shabazz and Bill Durrence for withholding support for this project. Shame on Tony Thomas for his post vote realization that it was a bad idea; did Mr. Thomas not do his research in a timely manner? Shame on Ms. Bell as well who reportedly left early for a flight. Was it an urgent trip, arranged at the last minute? Could the travel have been scheduled to accommodate this important vote, one that weighs most heavily on her constituents? Was the travel a convenient way to abstain and, if so, why? Senator McCain made it to Washington DC days after his brain surgery to speak out and cast his vote on the health care legislation.
Things like this are why people like me have so little confidence in their governing bodies. At all levels.
There is language in the story about a strategic plan" being developed for Savannah. Would it not make sense to hold off voting on a matter this consequential until the strategic plan has been adopted?
