It has been a pleasure as lead visual designer to help craft and contribute to the escape savannah look online and in media. I am very happy to share in this award and look forward to continued success for escape savannah.
In September of 2016, the art of Savannah Artist and Sign painter, the Late William Pleasant, Jr was inducted into the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institutes National Museum of African American History and Culture (NAAMHC). This event was publicized in Savannah in periodicals like Connect Savannah and others.
Following news of that historical event. The son of the late William Pleasant, Artist J. Pleasant, who also served as assistant co-coordinator in the preservation of the Pleasant art collection. Was indirectly attacked in what could be called a hate crime. His motorbike was sabotaged in a manner that would have caused for Pleasant to lose his life as a result of mechanical failure. The following day on Island hwy 80 Pleasants bike locked up on him at 65 mph. Only through expert motorcycle handling skill and a miracle was Pleasant uninjured.
Later investigation of the motor found that a combination of sugar and or sand had been poured into Pleasants engine.
To this day those who assaulted Pleasants property remain unknown.
Though it would be nice to assume that those who hate present themselves in a manner that would make them easily identifiable. It must be noted that unlike the haters of the past. Todays racists and haters blend in. Much like the Alt-Right warriors of online web channels such as Rebel Media, Black Ice Tv and others. The haters of today present themselves in the image of progressives, gays, punks and other individuals. Though it does not take long to see through their facade and encounter the same ideology of general hate, anti-antisemitism and racism from years past. The style has changed but the mentality remains the same. Hate in Savannah functions on an institutional level and has infiltrated each and every sector of the local society, from commerce to government. Much like in the Wizard of Oz, it will take time to pull back the curtain of illusion that has cloaked this hateful lot for so long. No level of cultural appropriation, feel good songs or misdirected focus shall be effective until we identify the source and act accordingly to snuff out those individuals and tax funded institutions that have for generations functioned to blatantly exclude, filter and misdirect genuine dialog and action in regards to the ongoing issues of gross socioeconomic inequality, gross wealth disparities and racial gentrification in Savannah. They each have their tokens who work hard to maintain a specific script. However that narrative does not include confronting pressing issues in a way that brings any meaningful change. Thus the cycle begins again, around and around we go. Fun facts and all.
