Dramatic Imagination in the Music of Puccini

Savannah VOICE Festival’s (SVF) latest initiative, “Virtually Live,” will offer online audiences a way to experience live music during this time of social distancing. In taking up the mantle of Italian opera from the great master, Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini attributed his own success to his ability to “put great sorrows in little souls.” These characters have made La Bohème, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly eternally popular over the decades and throughout the world. Metropolitan Opera assistant conductor and pianist, Howard Watkins explores Puccini’s brilliance through these three great operatic masterpieces.
