Re: “It ain't 'broke.' So let's fix it.

Dude, if you were to strip the rich of every nickel, it wouldn't be a drop in the bucket to what the government spends, plus there would be no "rich" people to start businesses, hire people, give to charities or be taxed 36% of their income. The fact is, NOBODY can afford to give people everything they want or need. The only rational thing is for people to take care of themselves and their families. You can get rid of the rich people, the innovators, the investors and you can have Soviet Russia. We need less government, which will be cheaper government, and we'll all be safer and have more money.

Re: “Secession impressions

You nailed it, Jim. All one has to do is read the declarations of the separate states on why they wanted to secede. Yes, they had other economic beefs with the U.S. government, but the one that was going to kill the South was the ending of slavery. Some of us believe that they had a perfect right to secede. The Union was not working out for them in the way they'd intended when they joined. The war could have been avoided if the U.S. had accepted their removal and ceded the fort back to South Carolina. That would have preserved the spirit of the Constitution, unlike forcing a section which wanted to leave to stay. We're still living with the effects of that, also.

Re: “I'll always run to Sweet Melissa's

I love the way you combine a review with a shameless request for a new type of pizza. Very crafty! And any campaign to rid the world of too-old sweet tea is commendable.

Re: “Halloween is always on Oct. 31, people

I'm a Christian. Christians for at least as long as I have been alive have participated in Halloween. It IS stupid to change it! And was there even any outcry about having it on Sunday or was this pre-emptive busy-bodying? Generally speaking, the government should butt out of our holidays. If they want to observe them, fine, but don't go around messing them up! I second the above "A-freaking-me"!

Re: “The broad side of a Barnes

The cup usage confuses and scares, eh? Personally, I think the half gallon sized cups are the best for sweet tea. Maybe the smaller ones are for unsweet. Love the column!
