Pipelines, fracking, hydropower even, etc. none have the energy flux density that is needed for full scale U.S. industrial and agricultural production. Run all sources wide open for production then ease off into total dependence on cleaner and more dense energy platforms. Who knows? Maybe by then we'll have He3 to fuel thermofusion reactors. A track of diminishing returns for dirty energy heading toward progress as well as low pollution and climate changes mean the race to win is tricky.
