From Me to Them to Me Again

The exhibition brings together two major works in Lorraine O’Grady’s oeuvre: the film Landscape (Western Hemisphere) (2010/2011) and the series of haiku diptychs Cutting Out the New York Times (1977/2018). To create the original series, O’Grady manipulated headings, words and phrases from The New York Times over 26 consecutive Sundays to create new poetic assemblages that reference Dada, Surrealism and concrete poetry, which were recently published as large-scale works. The title of the exhibition references O’Grady’s concern with a cyclical, interrogative revisiting of her work in ongoing efforts to unlock new meaning and critically considers the dialectical relationship between the artist, her output, the institution and the public.
