In literature, place orients a reader, puts a story in context, and alerts one to language and dialect. But it also conveys culture and cultural meaning, including the values and psychologies of those who have been formed there. This lecture by Sarah Domet will explore the literature and anxiety of place and the idea of "home" in fiction. What makes a work "Southern" and, more importantly, who can write about the South?
