Mocktails: Not just for kids anymore

A sampling of Savannah’s best low/no alcohol mixology

THE beginning of the new year is a perfect time to focus on starting fresh. It's a great opportunity to make resolutions for improving finances, learning new skills or finally breaking a bad habit.

For many, New Year's resolutions mean a focus on wellness. Healthy goals are set to knock off that last ten pounds or start a new exercise program.

Another common New Year's resolution is to limit or even stop consuming alcohol, but that can mean feeling uncomfortable at events that focus on drinking.

Here are some options in Savannah that offer delicious choices for people drinking as well as those who are abstaining:

The Alley Cat Lounge

Tucked away behind their Broughton Street building, the entrance to the Alley Cat Lounge can be hard to find. Their bar offerings make it well worth the effort. With fresh squeezed lemon and lime, Earl Grey honey and fruit purees at their disposal for their extensive cocktail list, the bartenders are highly skilled in also making a tasty mocktail.

One particular standout is an adaptation of their Pomegranate Cucumber Southside with gin, a staple on the menu. The alcohol-free version uses the Alley Cat's homemade pomegranate grenadine with cucumber, mint, lemon and soda water over ice. For some reason, the combination results in a delicious drink that is reminiscent of watermelon and very refreshing.

The Alley Cat also carries lower ABV-version beverages (alcohol by volume). Cordials, port, sherry and vermouth-focused drinks help lower the potency, allowing for a longer drinking experience as well as eliminating the next day's hangover.

The Chromatic Dragon

A gamer’s happy place, the Chromatic Dragon has the trifecta of satisfaction - a plethora of games to stimulate even the most bored person, pub food and a fully stocked bar. However, as an all-ages establishment, parents don’t always want to imbibe around their children. Or if they do, some kids may want to have the fun gaming-themed drinks along with the adults, even if they are underaged.

While the Chromatic Dragon doesn’t offer a list of mocktails, the bartenders are more than happy to make versions of their most popular items without the spirits.

The Heisenberg, named for the illicit alter-ego of Walter White in Breaking Bad, combines the flavors of fruit juices, elderflower and a tableside shot of ‘liquid baby blue’ into a chemical reaction worthy of the name.

Skooma, which gets its reputation from the game Skyrim, mixes up the flavors of peaches, raspberry and lemon for a sweet solution to less alcohol. More fruit concoctions have mocktail versions. The potions on the menu are available and come in a take-home bottles.

Jen’s and Friends

With over 300 martinis available, Jen’s and Friends is still adding to their menu. In fact, they plan on eventually getting to 365 different drink varieties, one for every day of the year.

This friendly bar serves up martinis in different price points, with quite a few adaptable to be non-alcoholic. Favorites are the Birthday Cake Martini with a slice of cake and a lit birthday candle, the Almond Joy garnished with the candy bar, a Rice Krispy Treat Martini, Blackberry Lemon Drop and Pomegranate.

Jen’s sees quite a few people that may be abstaining from alcohol. They love to make versions of their creations for designated drivers and on some drinks, the pregnant ladies even get a miniature plastic baby on top of their whipped cream.

The Emporium

The Perry Lane Hotel’s restaurant has all the benefits of being attached to a hotel, especially the valet parking. The Emporium Kitchen and Wine Bar houses a coffee bar, a selection of wines and purveyed goods, a gourmet restaurant and gorgeous bar.

On their diverse menu, there are mocktail selections listed. The Riverfront Mule is available, a spicy citrus mixture of ginger syrup, lime, mint and ginger beer.

Another option is the Professor’s Old Fashioned with strong black tea, bitters, turbinado syrup and lemon oil. Paired with the Emporium’s Farmer’s Market Crudite or Market Cheese Plate, these mocktails won’t leave anyone feeling like they are missing out.

Savannah is known for its boozy nightlife, but there are plenty of options for fun without alcohol. Whether the mocktails are refreshing, fun or just a sweet treat, area bars are more than accommodating for anyone who finds themself wanting to limit their drinking.
