Eric Culberson Blues Band

The area’s best-known electric R & B guitarist and vocalist – who’s led his own band for well over a decade and released three solid albums of Chicago and Memphis-style blues. Tues. (hosts Open Mic Night) - Wed., Mercury Lounge + Thurs., JJ Cagney’s + Sun., 9 pm, Fiddler’s Crab House.

Mary Davis & Company

Acoustic trio centered around the vocals and guitar of Davis – better known as the frontwoman for the impressive Wilmington Island-based party act Band In The Park. This trio’s sets focus on well-known rock, pop and soul tunes. Fri., 9 pm, Fiddler’s Crab House + Sat., Pogy’s Bar & Grill (Richmond Hill).

Genrevolta

Angular, whipcord rock from Charleston with a punk attitude, but a much more disciplined and experimental approach. Their push-and-pull dynamics recall both Matt Verta-Ray’s Speedball Baby and Steve Albini’s Shellac. Fri., 10 pm, The Jinx.

Red Moon

Reggae-influenced South Carolina jam band that has become something of a permanent fixture on our local organic rock scene. Tues. (hosts Open Mic Night) + Fri., JJ Cagney’s.

Rick & (Liquid) Ginger

Stripped-down acoustic duo featuring key members of popular area modern rock band Liquid Ginger. Their sets focus on well-known covers, but also include some of their own material. Thurs., 9 pm, Fiddler’s Crab House.

The Rounders, Last Train

Chattanooga’s Rounders play straight-up, old-school outlaw country with a whiskey back. originals and covers. Openers Last Train mine the same basic territory. They’ve played this venue before alongside other roots-rock and hillbilly acts. Sat., 10 pm, The Jinx.

Soap

This nascent local rock band cites The Velvet Underground and Talking Heads as key influences. Their latest demo surely bears this out (especially the Byrne-like guitar figures), but there’s also a strange, affected Southern drawl that crops up in singer Joa Kelley’s vocals which at times makes them sound like a dopesick version of “Country Honk”-era Stones. Local modern indie-rock songwriter Brock Scott opens the show. Thurs., 7:30 pm, The Sentient Bean.

Southpaw

Regional quintet (with a strong – and growing – following) playing popular modern and classic country covers. Wed. + Fri. - Sat., 9 pm, Gilley’s (Hinesville).

The Lavon Stevens & Louise Spencer Group

This regional quartet of vocals, piano, drums and bass plays often at this swank resort island supper club. They offer contemporary and mainstream jazz favorites. Fri. - Sat., 7:30 pm, The Jazz Corner (Hilton Head).

16ail Thurmond

A downtown fixture of sorts, this vibrant singing pianist has been playing jazzy standards and show tunes in this cozy darkwood bar for over a decade. Many folks make it a point to stop in and see Gail whenever they pass through the area. She’s a welcome constant in the increasingly disparate downtown entertainment world. Solo set of contemporary acoustic folk and blues-influenced rock by a prolific locally-based singer/songwriter whose powerful voice and impressionistic lyrics help him to straddle the line between being an overtly commercial pop tunesmith and a rather unique artist with the potential for great niche-market success.
