Mesmerizing instrumental space-rock trio (think Hawkwind, Helios Creed, CAN, etc...), featuring members of ARTillery Punch and The Jazz & Tango Kings. Noted local rock guitarist Kevin F. Frank Emerson

Beloved local acoustic guitarist and singer, specializing in Celtic material. Wed. - Sun., Kevin Barry’s.

The Hellblinki Sextet

The brainchild of former Savannah resident Andrew Benjamin, this Augusta-based collective plays dark and addled Vaudevillian blues strongly influenced by both old-timey gypsy flair and the European cabaret tradition. While their rotating lineup makes it impossible to guarantee this live show will live up to their way-cool indie CD, if space permitted, I’d have made this a Recommended Show of the week on that basis alone. They employ everything from toy instruments to transistor radios and empty wine bottle-percussion, and as such, their songs aim squarely for fans of the creepy burlesque-and-sea chanty vibe of Swordfishtrombones-era Tom Waits. Sat., 10 pm, The Jinx.

The Scott Giddens Quartet

Nicknamed “The Reverend,” for his ability to “take you to church” with his spiritual take on the blues, this Florida pianist swings hard, with influences drawn from Herbie Hancock, Monk, and Ahmad Jamal, among others. Fri. - Sat., 7:30 pm, The Jazz Corner (Hilton Head).

The Alex Nguyen Trio

Young trumpet prodigy, backed by veterans Von Barlow (drums) – who’s worked with the late Lou Rawls, Roy Ayers and Etta James, among others – and Paul

Sikivie

Singer and clarinetist born and raised in Savannah, but now based out of Asheville, N.C.., and offering jazz standards, blues and oldies. Fri., 9 pm, The Mansion on Forsyth Park.

Phantom Wingo

Loose, fiery Southern blues-rock that’s one part twang and two parts jam, much like Widespread Panic and The Allman Brothers Band, 2 groups whose influence practically drips off this talented quartet. Thurs., (10 pm), Fiddler’s Crab House + Fri., 10 pm, Savannah Blues.

Paul Reeves & Justin Aiello

Earnest acoustic neo-folk with an obvious Christian theme – similar in tone to Howie “Air Rage” Day. Thurs., 8 pm, Tubby’s (Thunderbolt).

Showbread

One of the biggest underground sensations of the past few years, this openly Christian metalcore act formed in Savannah, but tour internationally. They combine wildly cathartic live shows and brutal, oppressive material with silly uniforms and self-effacing (?) syncopated dance moves. Also appearing, reconstituted local indie-rockers The Round Table, and hardcore acts A Gun A Girl A Ghost, and Waycross’ Oakstreet Thesis. ALL-AGES. Fri., 7 pm, Le Mort Rouge (103 W. Congress St.).

Randy "Hatman" Smith

Beach, boogie, blues and “Parrothead Music,” on acoustic guitar with sequenced backing. Thurs., 7 pm, Baja Cantina (The Landings).

Gail Thurmond

A downtown fixture of sorts, this vibrant singing pianist plays jazzy standards and show tunes. Tues. - Sun., Planter’s Tavern (beneath The Olde Pink House Restaurant).

Too Blue

Electric blues and R & B duo of guitarists Jeff Beasley and Ray Lundy (of Bottles & Cans). Fri., 10 pm, Molly Macpherson’s Scottish Pub + Sat., 6 pm, The Warehouse.
