The restaurant is owned by the husband-wife team of Ann Alfieris and Fotios Markou.
My husband has been a master chef for 30 years, Alfieris says. We opened in June 2002 and have gotten rave reviews. We serve French, Italian, Greek and Spanish food.
To celebrate their first and second anniversaries in business, Alfieris and Markou hosted two buffets that were enormously successful.
Now another buffet is being planned. Diners can get all the good food they can eat, all for a good cause.
The restaurant currently is sponsoring David Allen Spitdowski, Jr. in his quest to be a member of the United States Olympic Gymnastics Team. This 15-year-old native of Savannah has been training since age 7 and competing in gymnastic competitions since age 10.
David has won 65 medals in the past five years and has qualified for the Georgia Mens Gymnastic Team three years in a row. In 2003, he placed third in the all-around at the Georgia Mens Gymnastic Championship.
Earlier this year, David competed as a Junior Elite Gymnast in the Haydens Rising Star Invitational, where he received medals in all six events. He currently is being trained by Reginald Sykes at Summit Gymnastics in Savannah.
Gymnastics isnt Davids only accomplishment. A 10th grader at the Bible Baptist School, he maintains a 3.875 grade point average.
The appetizers include Bruschetta, Pesto Pizza, Marinated Artichokes, Roasted Red Peppers, Roasted Beets, Fagioli, Stuffed Grape Leaves, Stuffed Eggplant, Stuffed Zucchini, Greek sausages, fruit and cheese, meatballs, marinated olives, pepperoncinis, spinach pie, cheese pie, feta cheese, Hummus, Babaganoush, Ktipiti, tomatoes with mozarella and a meat tray.
Soups include Vegetarian Minestrone, Lentil and Avgolemeno. The salads are Prassini, Nicoise, Greek salad, Insalata Mistra and Bouquetiere.
The main course offerings include roasted leg of lamb, beef Stroganoff, beef with string beans, baked chicken, chicken Marsala, chicken cacciatore, veal Parmesan, pork with artichokes, pork with rosemary, sole Florentine, Paella, salmon with dill, fill of fish Speciota, Penne Arabiatta, spaghetti with meatballs, Rigatonia ala Vodka, Fettucini Putanesca, Mousaka, Pastitsio, lasagna, assorted tarts and Scallops Au Gratin.
Side dishes include string beans, okra, Ratatouille, Orzo, rice pilaf and roasted potatoes.
Dessert, if you can manage it, will include Tiramisu, Cannoli, Creme Caramel, Creme Catalana, Baklava, Galactobouriko, Ec Mec, cheese cake, chocolate cake and fresh fruit.
In addition to hosting the buffet, Alfieris says donations are being sought from vendors and grocers that the restaurant purchases food items from. We have a whole list of supporters, she says.
The fundraising buffet came about because Davids parents, David and Linda Spitdowski, often dine at the Mediterranean Restaurant. This is a couple who came into the restaurant and we got to talking to them, Alfieris says.
As we became better friends, they started telling us about their sons accomplishments, she says. We started discussing how difficult it was to meet the financial needs of his sport.
Training for the Olympics takes talent, time and money. As he gets older, its getting more expensive, Alfieris says. We came up with the idea of a buffet to help out.
From Oct. 25 through Oct. 28, the Mediterranean Restaurant, 2308 Skidaway Rd., will host a four-day Mediterranean-style buffet. Fifty percent of proceeds will go to aspiring Olympic gymnast David Allen Spitdowski, Jr. Tickets are $20 per person and reservations are required. Call 233-3337.
