Savannah Jewish Film Festival: Double Feature -- Women Unchained & Aya

When: Tue., Jan. 28, 7 p.m. 2014
Price: $10 Gen. Adm. $8 JEA members
Women Unchained documents the experiences of modern-day “agunot,” women whose husbands refuse to grant them a Jewish divorce. According to traditional Jewish law, a woman who is an “aguna” (from the Hebrew word meaning “chained”) cannot re-marry. Shot in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles and Israel, Women Unchained includes illuminating interviews with leading women’s rights advocates, rabbis and experts. Aya is a dramatic short that features a young woman, who waits at the airport to collect someone, but finds herself picking up a complete stranger instead – Thomas Overby, a Danish music researcher visiting Israel as jury member of the Rubinstein Piano Competition. He believes Aya to be his assigned driver. Optional Dinner 6:00 pm
