SURF CURSE + SOUR WIDOWS @ DISTRICT LIVE
Reno, Nevada, does not conjure up images of sand and surf. If you’ve ever spent time there, you know it does conjure up images of semi-annoying weirdos and gaming industry divas teeming with self-esteem. For whatever reason, Surf Curse moved to LA early on and became a solid part of the underground music scene. Their 2013 song “Freaks” blew up on TikTok in 2020, spurring greater recognition and injecting new life into the band. Their latest album Magic Hour was recorded at Electric Lady in NYC and released by Atlantic Records. That’s a long way from the Reno.

EASILY AMUSED + THE COYOTES @ ELAN SAVANNAH
The Augusta rockers are inexplicably camera-shy. They (at least once) self-described as “indie/alt rock,” but a sampling of their sound reveals more classic rock influences, with multiple vocalists and a second percussionist aside from the drummer. The obvious talent and versatility is hard to deny. Opening the show are post-punk/psychedelic rockers The Coyotes from Boone, NC.

MICHAEL FEINBERG QUARTET

Alternately called a musical prodigy and an evil genius, Feinberg accomplished a lot in a short time. He held the bass chair for six months at Churchill Grounds jazz club in Atlanta while in high school. As a sophomore at Da U in Miami, he released his first album. It earned him a residency at Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. He released “Evil Genius” in 2009 and was awarded with a headline spot at SXSW in Austin. Graduate studies at NYU led to more collaborations with Gotham’s wealth of talent and a third critically acclaimed album. His latest, “Blues Variant” is another triumph. From modern jazz to the Elvin Jones/John Coltrane style, Feinberg composes music as skillfully as he plays it.

Indie dream pop bands seem to focus on Savannah, or it could just be that there is a large and growing national scene that has audiences demanding more. Illiterate Light are up to the task, blending mellow beats and harmonies with a lightness that contrasts the occasional times when the Gibson SG is up front, driving the song a little harder. Fans of Little Bird, Pink Beds, and Savannah’s own Fauvely are bound to find a new favorite here. Local rockers Basically Nancy open with a bang.

The multitalented Childress is not only a killer stand-up comic, he’s also an architectural design manager who spent three years in Shanghai. While there, he caught the comedy bug hanging at the Kung Fu Komedy Club. He admits he wasn’t good for the first year, but over the last decade he’s refined his routine, with self-deprecating humor about being a big guy, taking jiu-jitsu just to have human touch only to be immediately assaulted with no learning curve, and a lot of profoundly funny filth.

Savannah’s Bassmaster General Eric “Big E” Moore leads this Sunday night institution at CSSC, always backed by a crew of musical assassins. They get industry night going with a heavy dose of rock, funk, R&B, and have been doing so for a years. If you haven’t seen them, this Sunday night is the perfect opportunity. Since it’s CSSC, other opportunities are on tap as well.

ERIC CULBERSON BAND – TRIBUTE TO THE 3 KINGS @ VICTORY NORTH
Following up last year’s phenomenal show, Savannah’s top blues guitarist Eric Culberson welcomes Rolling Stones musical director and keyboardist Chuck Leavell to sit in for the night. Eric also brought back Tony Coleman, who has drummed for the two of the three kings (B.B. and Albert, not Freddie). Local stalwarts Eric “Big E” Moore on bass and Kevin Rose on guitar join even more musicians for a night of stunning blues and heartfelt appreciation.

A member of bluegrass revivalists City Hotel and local honky-tonk supergroup The Grand Gestures, Zimmer has been a professional musician for 20 years. Before joining bands, he started playing clubs in Athens as a UGA student. Today, his solo material leans into folk, with vivid storytelling and intriguing melodies. A legitimate pro from Dover.
