Like all thespians, Bryan Pridgen is good with words. โ€œWe are,โ€ he says, โ€œa young company of professionals with big dreams and a lot of nerve.โ€

Pridgen is a coโ€“founder and the creative director of Savannah Stage Company, a fiveโ€“member (thus far) collective of likeโ€“minded theatrical talents whoโ€™ve hitched their dreams โ€” and nerve โ€” to a brandโ€“new wagon:

โ€œWe want to start a nonโ€“profit, nonโ€“union professional theater,โ€ he explains. โ€œItโ€™s really important to us that artists be paid for the work that they do. Thereโ€™s a huge community theater support base here, which tells me that this is wanted.โ€

With a halfโ€“dozen active community and college theater groups in Savannah, a fullโ€“scale childrenโ€™s theater, and the professional, touristโ€“revue minded Savannah Theatre doing big business on Chippewa Square, is there room here?

โ€œOne of the biggest demographics we want to hit is people who may not like theater, or think theaterโ€™s boring, or want to change viewpoints about the possibilities of what theater can mean,โ€ Pridgen says. โ€œThat means getting it out of the theater, taking it to a bar or something and doing an improv night, anything to get it out in front of the people. And then trust that they will compensate us for it.โ€

The incorporated nonโ€“profit began life this fall with a production of the Pridgenโ€“composed Rip Van Winkle: A New Musical, in area schools and libraries. โ€œTheater for young audiences has a really big place in our hearts,โ€ explains Pridgen.

โ€œThatโ€™s a really big part of what we do. We think that that is the future audience, and we have to give theater to them. And theater thatโ€™s meaningful, and touches them on their level, and doesnโ€™t talk down to them.โ€

Pridgen and two other coโ€“founders came to Savannah from the Barter Theatre, Virginiaโ€™s state theater, in the city of Abingdon. They chose Savannah to launch their project because, in Pridgeonโ€™s words, itโ€™s a relatively small city with a vibrant cultural scene.

โ€œOur motto now is to be โ€˜accessible and adaptable,โ€™ so that we can go into a school space, a library space, a bar, to go anywhere to do whatever show,โ€ says Pridgen. โ€œWeโ€™ve got touring shows, weโ€™ve got these featured shows, and weโ€™re implicating โ€˜pay what you canโ€™ so that if you canโ€™t afford the ticket price, you can still get in to see that show.

โ€œWe think the people that appreciate the work that we do will pay to see professionalโ€“quality work onstage, if you give it to them and make it worth the value.โ€

Theyโ€™ve been attending community theater performances all over town, and meeting with people from Bay Street, the Collective Face, Muse and more.

โ€œThere is a very lively theater community here, itโ€™s small,โ€ he adds. โ€œItโ€™s loyal, but itโ€™s small.โ€

The other core members are artistic director Jayme Tinti, business manager Ethan Parrill, technical director Wesley Pridgen (Bryanโ€™s brother) and director of advancement Liz Whittimore.

โ€œOften times,โ€ Pridgen laughs, โ€œwe ask each other โ€˜Are we crazy for doing this?โ€™ And then we see what this town does, and Iโ€™m encouraged.โ€
