The Savannah High School Summer Basketball League begins next week at Savannah High on Pennsylvania Avenue, and the league will run the entire month of June as it has in years past.

Savannah High’s head coach Time Jordan confirmed the details of the laid back summer league. Week 1 begins on Monday, June 5 and games will be played every week on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Participating teams include: Savannah High, Johnson, Beach, Groves, Benedictine, Windsor Forest, Bradwell Institute, Savannah Country Day, St. Andrew’s, Jenkins, Bethesda Academy and Woodville-Tompkins.

Immediately, I think noticeable non-participants include: Islands, Savannah Christian, New Hampstead, Richmond Hill, Bryan County and both Effingham and South Effingham. The nature of the summer league is one that allows teams to sort of come-and-go as their schedule dictates. So playing, or not playing in the league to start is not necessarily indicative of anything significant.

Tip-time “slots” on Mondays and Wednesdays will be 5pm, 6pm and 7pm and, with a “sidecourt” setup, two games will be played simultaneously during each slot. So, that’s six games per night and 12 per week.

Typically, games will be played with running clocks, minimal fouls and free subs (hockey style). Personal fouls aren’t usually tracked and a majority of the focus for coaches and assistants is on developing younger players new to the program as opposed to playing rising juniors and seniors for big minutes.

The public is invited to attend and admission is $3 per person, per night.

DEAD WEEK NO. 1

Schools are prohibited from participating in voluntary workouts, camps and/or clinics, weight training or competitions during Georgia High School Association “Dead Weeks.”

This week, May 29 – June 4, is the first of two summer dead weeks on the GHSA calendar. The second is scheduled for Monday, July 3 through Sunday, July 9, 2023. The GHSA office is closed both weeks, because, well, I guess they are prohibited from working those weeks too.
