WSAV-TV will celebrate its sixth annual Blitz Border Bowl, a high school football all-star game where the best seniors from the South Carolina Lowcountry compete against the best seniors from the Georgia Coastal Empire. It’s not all about the competition, as the game will benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire. The Blitz Border Bowl VI will be played on January 13, 2024 at noon at Memorial Stadium in Savannah.
“There is no question Blitz Border Bowl VI will be a great football game. But the real winners should be the families that receive comfort and support from the Ronald McDonald House here in Savannah. They need our help, and the support of our community. We’re proud to have been joined by the Alee Shriners as a co-sponsor this year. With the Shriners help, we are hoping to sell-out Memorial Stadium,” said David Hart, Vice President and General Manager of WSAV-TV and chief organizer of the event said.
Team Lowcountry will be led by Hayden Gregory, head football coach of Bluffton High School. Team Coastal Empire will be led by Loren Purvis, head football coach of South Effingham High School. Both coaches are in the midst of highly successful first seasons as head coaches at the respective schools. “Over the course of the next few weeks, our coaches will pick their assistants and the seniors who will make up our two all-star teams. We’re excited to see that process play out and we’re looking forward to a great game come Saturday, January 13th at Memorial Stadium,” Hart said.
Billy Sorochak, CEO/Executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire said, “The Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms and Ronald McDonald Care Mobile serve not only Southeastern Georgia, but the South Carolina Lowcountry as well. We are humbled to be the beneficiary of such a wonderful event. We’re especially honored to have the support of local McDonalds owner operators in the area the Ronald McDonald House of the Coastal Empire serves.”
WSAV Sports Director Joey Lamar said, “It’s a great event. A fantastic city like Savannah should have its own bowl game, so I’m proud to be a part of organizing Savannah’s Bowl Game. We have a terrific venue, a worthy cause to support, great football players, and two first-rate coaches.”
Savannah’s Memorial Stadium is recognized as a first-class venue. This will be the fifth time the Blitz Border Bowl has been played there. Steve Proper, Director for Chatham County Parks & Recreation Department commented, “We are pleased to host this game at Memorial Stadium. The game provides great benefits to the players, community and most importantly the children and their families who receive services from the Ronald McDonald House.”
