In most places where they exist, casinos are often the thing that communities turn to when there’s not a more viable option for economic development. That desperation is certainly not the case here.
Editor’s Note
Editor’s Note: Savannah’s continuing double standard on small businesses
Savannah needs to have a coherent policy which balances the very real need of residents to have input, and the very real property rights of small business investors.
Editor’s Note: Behind the crime stats
In terms of trend analysis, 2015 and 2016 stand on their own as almost eerily similar compared to each other. But taken as a unit they also stand in stark contrast to the prior decade.
Editor’s Note: Armstrong/Georgia Southern merger brings fear, and many questions
The Board of Regents apparently learned a lesson from the last time Armstrong was in merger talks: Keep it all under wraps until the last possible second.
Editor’s Note: Good news for 2017, with a warning
One of the things I learned covering this controversy is how ill-informed many Savannah citizens are about the process of funding local nonprofits.
Editor’s Note: Three-year nonprofit funding phaseout is the devil in the details
I support the idea that nonprofits should have a diversified funding stream. But this clause comes uncomfortably close to comparing arts and social services nonprofits to welfare recipients, who just need a helping hand until they can stand on their own two feet, etc.
Editor’s Note: Budget battle is only just beginning
City Manager Hernandez fielded citizens’ questions expertly and bluntly, always coming back to painting the same bleak picture: City finances are unsustainable in current form due mostly to the actions of his predecessors.
Editor’s Note: The arts are still our best investment
The City rightly and responsibly expects cultural organizations to diversify their funding streams and not be overly reliant on taxpayer largesse. Most administrations, however, have seen the value of the investment not only for political purposes, but also because it’s just the right thing to do.
Editor’s Note: Musings about Muse
Begun by the wife/husband team of JinHi Soucy Rand and Mark Rand, Muse was built not only on that pair’s unmatched devotion to local theatre and arts, but on their unique ability to project love, positivity, and support for creative people around Savannah, regardless of background or bank account.
Editor’s Note: A city reeling from loss
Don Logana was a big man with a big personality and big heart to match. But he was no rube or shill, or God forbid, a hack. He had the built-in BS detector of any good journalist.
Editor’s Note: Will the media own up, or double down?
One is left wondering how many people simply didn’t vote because all they heard from the mainstream media for months was how impossible and unimaginable a Trump presidency would be.
Editor’s Note: The Day After
My best effort at wrapping up some of the lessons of this election in a way which might help people move forward to a more positive place.
