Chantel Britton Apr 18, 2023 4:00 AM

Since its start in 1970, Earth Day has become a global movement committed to advocating for the preservation of the planet and the conservation of natural resources. Earth Day is observed each year on April 22 as a way to raise awareness about issues and causes related to the environment and ecology. Earth Day is all about encouraging individuals and industries to shift toward sustainable solutions that will help prevent pollution, protect the environment and ensure a liveable planet for generations to come. Locally, there are a few Earth Day happenings taking place. Show your support by attending these eco-conscious events.

Earth Day Savannah

Earth Day Savannah is an annual event celebrating environmental sustainability and conservation efforts throughout the Savannah community. This year’s event is scheduled for Friday, April 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Daffin Park. The 2023 theme is “Our Future is Bright” and the event will inform the public about the city’s clean energy goals. There will also be live entertainment, educational activities, exhibitions and food trucks. Visit earthdaysavannah.org/ for more information.

Thunderbolt Earth Day & Arbor Day Celebration

The Town of Thunderbolt is hosting a community Earth Day and Arbor Day celebration at Cesaroni Park on April 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. In accordance with this year’s Earth Day theme, “Invest in our Planet,” the event will feature several vendors onsite to educate and engage with attendees.

Little J’s Farm will be present to conduct a fun goat yoga session from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Prepare to enjoy some laughs as you interact with loveable baby goats during the relaxing yoga class. Tickets are required to participate in goat yoga and can be purchased online at littlejsfarm.com

Savannah Tree Foundation Green Gala

Savannah Tree Foundation will be hosting their second annual Green Gala on April 22 at Tiedeman Park from 6 to 10 p.m. The Green Gala will celebrate the Hostess City’s urban forest and those who have contributed to its growth while promoting STF’s mission to protect and grow the local tree canopy through tree planting, community and advocacy.

It will be an eco-friendly evening spent underneath Savannah’s verdant and lush tree canopy, complete with cocktails, a silent auction and a toothsome four-course dinner. Additionally, STF will honor 2023 Tree Champion Dale Thorpe.

The organizers of the sustainable soiree ensure that the gala generates minimal waste by utilizing composting, recycling and smart reuse of materials. For more information and tickets, visit savannahtree.org/support/greengala/

Tybee Clean Beach Sweep

Tybee Clean Beach, a volunteer group dedicated to keeping the island’s shores pristine, invites the public to join them on April 23, the day following Earth Day, from 10 a.m. to noon for a community beach sweep.

Removing beach litter prevents such materials from entering the ocean and harming precious marine life like sea turtles, dolphins, endangered shore birds and other animals that inhabit the island and its waters.

Those interested in participating should meet up at 1509 Strand Avenue between 10 and 11 a.m. All equipment will be provided. To learn more, visit tybeecleanbeach.org
