IT'S always fun to catch live music in the quintessentially Savannah setting of Johnny Harris Restaurant. This week, the Coastal Jazz Association continues its Sunday Evening concert series with a special performance by local saxophonist Jody Espina.
Espina has been a Lowcountry resident for seven years; after moving here to be closer to family, Espina has become a prominent and inspiring influence on the local music scene in more ways than one. While you can catch Espina gigging around town, saxophone and clarinet players may have discovered Espina’s other passion: JodyJazz Saxophone & Clarinet Mouthpieces (Espina has twelve employees at his Savannah-based factory/showroom).
A Berklee College of Music alum and former Director of the Jazz Department at the prestigious Hoff-Barthelson Music School, Espina has taught music in Barcelona, toured with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and spent fifteen years performing, recording and teaching music. Espina’s skills have landed him on film soundtracks, in Broadway pit orchestras, and in inner-city schools with the Grammys in the Schools Program. He’s performed alongside greats like Mel Tormé, Louis Bellson, and Eddie Arnold. Sunday, August 16, 5 p.m., $20, free for Coastal Jazz Association and students with valid student ID
