Argyle

Local alt.rock group straddling the lines between rubberband jamming and tight, compact song structures. Their challenging originals draw form punk, reggae, ska and classic rock, and their covers do the same. Tues., 10 pm, Fiddler’s Crab House.

ASG

Hailing from the Wrightsville Beach area of North Carolina, this rambunctious trio (formed from the ashes of the defunct – and beautifully named – Uretha Franklins) sounds like a surprisingly palatable cross between Queens Of The Stone Age and Porno For Pyros, so it’s no surprise that these avid surfers enlisted PFP and Fu Manchu producer Matt Hyde to helm their upcoming album out at Sound City in Los Angeles. While they’d rather tell you what they’re “definitely not” (emo) than what they are, let’s just say that at times, they resemble what Live At Budokan-era Cheap Trick would sound like if they were a metal band with a serious Ronnie James Dio fixation. After this Savannah date, they hook up with the Vans Warped Tour for over 20 shows. Sat., The Jinx.

Popular straight-ahead electric blues trio with a rock-solid rhythm section, and an expressive guitarist. Sat., 10 pm, Mercury Lounge.

Chuck Courtenay, Sr. & Chuck Courtenay, Jr.

Father and son duo playing a wide variety of adult contemporary pop, country and rock hits, as well as plenty of oldies and bar-band standards. Wed., The Island Grill (Pt. Wentworth).

Cretin Grims

Nashville-based power-punk act that some have likened to L.A. stalwarts FEAR. They’ve shared the stage with everyone from the UK Subs to Antiseen. Fri., The Jinx.

Eric Culberson Blues Band

Eric (or EROK as he’s sometimes known) is a dynamic singing guitarist in the vein of Freddie King or Albert Collins. He’s readying a 3rd CD. Tues. (hosts Open Mic) - Wed., Mercury Lounge + Thurs., Locos Deli & Pub.

Eat Mo' Music

Instrumental soul combo with a growing fanbase. Their invigorating lineup of trombone, trumpet, bass, guitar and drums is a nice change of pace from the standard jazz acts in our area, and they bridge the gap nicely between funky dance grooves and standard-fare dinner music. Fri., 9:30 pm Il Pasticcio + Sat., 9 pm, Jazz’d Tapas Bar.

Jacey Falk & His Rhythm

New jazz and R & B combo led by Falk, a Savannah native who honed his scat-singing and showmanship during a short stint on the NYC jazz scene. He’s known for a sassy attitude and a whimsical stage presence, and has released one indie CD. Thurs., 8 pm, The Mansion on Forsyth Park.

Trae Gurley's Sinatra Tribute

Local thespian and vocalist who has devoted himself to recreating the lush, big-band arrangements from the golden age of ‘Ol Blue Eyes’ career. He sings live to pre-recorded backing, and has earned a solid following at a number of venues throughout the area with his respectful take on an American legend. Thurs., 7 pm, Jazz’d Tapas Bar.

The Hazzard County Band feat. The Courtenay Brothers

Full, electric country band mixing covers and originals. Thurs., 7 pm, Tubby’s (Thunderbolt).

Craig Johansen

Solo acoustic classic rock, ‘80s hits and power-pop nuggets (a la The Beatles, ABBA and Rick Springfield) from this longtime local singer/guitarist (And Sometimes Why?, The 8-Tracks, Hot Pink Interior). Sat., 6 pm, The Warehouse.

 

Keith & Ross

Acoustic duo (known for their vocals) offering loose, playful renditions of rock, country and jam favorites. Thurs., 10 pm, Fiddler’s Crab House.

Keith Kozel & The Foxedos

This monthly showcase for local “anti-folk” artists is curated by Kozel, who’s known variously throughout the area as the frontman and main songwriter of alternative rock acts GAM, Superhorse and The Mighty Dr. Illusion. Backed on a variety of unusual instruments(bass, guitar, synthesizer, theremin, violin, drums) by the classically-trained Ricardo Ochoa and the self-taught Seb Edwards, Kozel offers up unique, stripped-down arrangements of his own compositions, and regularly backs up other local songwriters in a similar format. Thurs., 8 pm, The Sentient Bean.

Misfortune 500

This quartet from Columbus, Georgia’s latest demo sounds about as much like Insesticide-era Nirvana as I can imagine anyone sounding in the year 2005. That’s by no means a bad thing. it’s tough to pull off that kind of angst and thunderous bombast. Close observation reveals trace elements of Los Angeles glammy hair metal in the mix as well. Ricardo Ochoa’s Jazz & Tango Kings

Wonderfully vital regional quartet playing old-school Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt-style hot jazz, plus Argentinian dance music. Their lineup includes viola, guitar, trap drums and standup bass. One of the most refreshing new combos to come along in years. Fri., 9 pm, Jazz’d Tapas Bar.



The Howard Paul Trio

Excellent, inventive jazz featuring the fretwork of 7-string guitarist Paul, one of the finest players in our area. Fri., 9 pm, The Mansion on Forsyth Park.

Perception

Classic, Southern and hard rock covers, plus originals in the same vein. Fri., Jukebox Bar & Grill (Richmond Hill).

Aaron Raitiere

Swampy blues/bluegrass guitarist from Kentucky inspired by John Prine, Howlin’ Wolf, Doc Watson and Beck. He pens songs about “Love, life, booze, dogs, food, cars, people, places, booze, love, and other stuff.” Sat., 8 pm, The Sentient Bean.

The Bobby Ryder Quartet

This veteran vocalist and bandleader’s four-piece offers a virtual history of Big Band-style jazz with a special emphasis on Sinatra-style crooning. Fri. - Sat., 7:30 pm, The Jazz Corner (Hilton Head).

Sam Shaber

Award-winning singer/songwriter who’s worked with such luminaries as Shawn Mullins (who signed her to his own indie record label). She’s known for emotionally-charged live shows and has received tremendous praise for her past appearances at this venue. Tues., 8 pm, The Sentient Bean.

She Alice

Up-and-coming female-fronted local party band, playing popular dance-oriented favorites by everyone from Kool & The Gang to Joe Cocker to Pink (!). Fri., Pogy’s (Richmond Hill) + Sat., Fusion/The Monkey Bar.

 

"Georgia" Kyle Shiver

Locally-based singer/songwriter with a strong voice, impressive acoustic guitar skills, and a few CD’s worth of soulful folk, and distinctly Southern blues. Fri., 7 pm, AJ’s Dockside Restaurant (Tybee) +Sun., Café Loco (10 pm).

Sweatin' Bullets

Rock & Roll cover band (both classic and modern hits) from Jacksonville, Fl. that plays regularly at this restaurant’s comfortable bar. Fri. - Sat., 9:30 pm, The Oyster Bar (Wilmington Island).



Too Blue

Electric duo of local singing blues guitarists Jeff Beasley and Ray Lundy (of Bottles & Cans). They play danceable blues, R & B and blues-rock. Thurs., 7:30 pm, The Jazz Corner (Hilton Head) + Fri., 10 pm, Mercury Lounge.

Two Path Road

Electric, jam-oriented local group (playing classic rock and modern country) featuring members of Keith & Ross, Argyle and The Six Million Dollar Band. Fri., 10 pm, Fiddler’s Crab House.

Greg Williams

Solo acoustic show from this prolific and nuanced singer/guitarist, who mixes timeless blues and rock tunes with his own impressive material in the same vein. Fri., 6 pm, The Warehouse.

WormsLoew

Young local roots-rock act that draws inspiration from The Drive-By Truckers, Widespread Panic, Jerry Joseph, and old-school Southern Rock. They offer a mix of gritty covers (The Band, DBT, etc...) and like mnded originals. Fri., Finnegan’s Wake + Sat., 10 pm, Spanky’s (River St.).
