EMPTY + MEADOWS + THE UNDERTAKING @ THE SENTIENT BEAN

South Carolina’s Empty (pictured) fits hip hop and metalcore into their indie rock, and they tend to get all over the place in their live shows, physically and sonically. Alabammy’s Meadows play a modern melodic hardcore. San Diego’s The Undertaking get right to the point with chaotic energy in compelling, brutal blasts. Quite a lineup, Tim.

FRI APR 14 | 7:30 PM

XIU XIU + DREAMEND @ THE LODGE OF SORROWS

The San Jose experimental rock outfit formed more than 20 years ago. Leader Jamie Stewart cites as influences Nina Simone, The Birthday Party and Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, however that works. The live material is different than the recorded, with emphasis on “the loud rock parts” but the experience is unique. Ryan Graveface’s Dreamend open up.

SAT APR 15 | 9 PM

HOVVDY @ DISTRICT LIVE

The Austin indie rockers are known for supremely soulful vocals and a distinctly mellow Americana vibe at times labeled slowcore. Very amusing, but it fits. Seems anyone in the Wilco, Jaybirds, folk and Dead vibe would be converted fast. Whitmer Thomas and girlpuppy, aka Becca Harvey, support.

WED APR 19 | 7 PM

MOONCHILD @ VICTORY NORTH

The LA alt-R&B/neo-soul trio got a jumpstart with praise any band would kill for: the endorsement of Stevie Wonder. He was impressed enough to invite them to open for his annual benefit concert. That should be enough information to pack the hall, but they back up the legend’s trust with their own modern take on the genre, at times reminiscent of the great Erykah Badu.

WED APR 19 | 8 PM

GABBY WATTS @ THE WORMHOLE

The stand-up comic and punk rock musician who does not like comedy music hit the TikTok jackpot with — you guessed it — comedy music. She wisely embraced it, branding It “anxiety pop,” and worked it into her routine. It’s not necessarily a music show, but she does host a monthly gig in her native Atlanta named Comedy Bandstand where the jokes must be sung with a backing band.

SAT APR 15 | 8 PM

BASIK LEE + QUINCE @ EL ROCKO LOUNGE

The Illtown native and musical chameleon has been playing a multitude of music styles to Savannah audiences for years. A former member of local hip-hop collective Dope Sandwich, Lee embraces the bigger picture of spreading sound and can be found strapped with a guitar as often as he’s dominating a microphone.

SAT APR 15 | 8 PM

THE BUZZARDS OF FUZZ + SPACE COKE @ EL ROCKO

The dons of Atlanta stoner rock fly through Savannah again, dropping untold ounces of heavy desert sounds. Distortion sectarians are encouraged to worship. Given the date, it’d be a sin to miss Space Coke’s closing 45-minute rendition of Sweet Leaf. The Pinx and Pink Peugeot light it up and pass it around early.

THUR APR 20 | 8 PM

MANDI STRACHOTA @ FOXY LOXY CAFE

Treat yourself to a rich blend of R&B, gospel, and soul, with a shot of grit and a splash of country sway. Mandi Strachota covers a lot of ground and you’d be pressed not to notice how her voice percolates above it all. She’s also a lot better than these weak-as-Keurig coffee puns.
