The Chatham County Police Department is warning merchants and consumers to be on the lookout after two financial card skimmers were found in local stores last week.
The skimmers—which can take financial information off of a debit or credit card—were found at both the Berwick and Johnny Mercer Boulevard Kroger stores last week. Customers who frequent those locations are urged to check their financial card transactions, and alert their bank about any suspicious account activity.

Legitimate card reader
Card skimmers look very similar to legitimate card readers. Fraudulent card skimmers often appear slightly thicker, and may lack the protective keypad covering designed to minimize what bystanders can see when a customer is typing numbers during a transaction. Because the differences are so slight and may not be immediately noticeable to customers, merchants are urged to make frequent checks of their card readers to make sure they have not been tampered with.
Customers should also be extra vigilant

and look for any indication that a card reader may have been replaced by a fraudulent card skimmer. Everyone should keep in mind that more fraudulent card skimmers may be placed at various locations, and not just the ones where they have already been detected and removed.
Anyone with information about who may be responsible for the card skimmers is asked to contact police. Anonymous tips can be sent through the Chatham County Police Department app, or the Department’s online tip form found here:
