In my road trips through the Carolinas and Georgia, I’m struck by how the small towns have become depopulated zombie wastelands. It’s a silent disaster. The old Main Streets of the old Confederacy are mostly boarded up.

After the gay marriage ruling, I’ve never seen such a widespread, spontaneous and genuine outpouring of joy, relief, and celebration from so many people as I saw that day, and the weekend to follow. Frankly, it might be the most deeply felt expression of national unity seen since 9/11, if I may be so bold.

As much as we want to think Charleston is the tipping point, many of us thought the same thing after Newtown, only to be bitterly disappointed. Next time there probably won’t be as obvious a vector for our grief and anger as a flag.
