Santaโ€™s reindeer are revolting. Well, theyโ€™re in revolt โ€” some of them, anyway. Things are definitely polarized at the North Pole.

Thereโ€™s your premise for Jeff Goodeโ€™s dark comedy The Eight: Reindeer Monologues, opening a oneโ€“weekend run Dec. 20 at Bay Street Theatre.

The doors are blowing off the cozy confines of the toy workshop as each of the Great Eight comes forward with their own version of Santaโ€™s shenanigans โ€” it seems he has been, um, ungentlemanly to Vixen, the sexy reindeer, and thereโ€™s more. Oh, so much more.

โ€œItโ€™s not like weโ€™re โ€˜waging war on Christmas,โ€™ like Fox News says,โ€ laughs Bay Street coโ€“founder Travis Coles, whoโ€™s directing The Eight on the Club One cabaret stage. โ€œBut we donโ€™t leave any stone unturned. Thereโ€™s no sacred cow, so we definitely keep our minds open to anything.โ€

Thatโ€™s the Bay Street manifesto laid bare โ€” even Christmas isnโ€™t sacrosanct when there are laughs to be mined, stereotypes to be punctured.

โ€œItโ€™s another one of those shows that you wouldnโ€™t see anywhere else,โ€ Coles adds. โ€œAlthough thereโ€™s not a lot of explicit language, itโ€™s certainly not a familyโ€“friendly show, by any means.โ€

But The Eight, he says, โ€œfits our space. Itโ€™s adult humor, for sure. Hopefully it will tie in well with the drag shows over that weekend. Get that kind of crowd to come in and enjoy it.โ€

The show is a fundraiser for Heads Up Guidance Services of Savannah (HUGS). โ€œPart of our mission,โ€ says Coles, โ€œis to do community outreach and fundraising.โ€

Cecelia Tran Arango (Rent, Avenue Q) plays the reindeer who starts this sinful snowball rolling.

โ€œVixen is sexy, provocative, and nonโ€“apologetic,โ€ Arango explains. โ€œI think of her character as a dominatrix type โ€” she enjoys black leather and spikes. She speaks her mind and doesnโ€™t hold back. If itโ€™s offensive, she doesnโ€™t care.

โ€œSheโ€™s at the center of turmoil because Vixenโ€™s accusing Santa of sexual harassment and rape … and sheโ€™s not the only victim. Sheโ€™s also not a fan of Mrs. Claus either. Sheโ€™s laying it all out on the line and could not care less if you believe her or not โ€“ because she knows sheโ€™s up against Santa โ€” the one person who can do no wrong โ€” but sheโ€™s going to tell her story anyway.โ€

The Bay Street cast also includes Bill Cooper (Dasher), Nick Dephtereos (Cupid), Erik Hauk (Prancer), Erin L. Muller (Blitzen), Shakur Freeney (Comet), Melanie Goldey (Dancer) and Timothy Reynolds (Donner).

(Donner party, your table is ready!)

โ€œOf the Elite 8, Vixenโ€™s closest to Blitzen,โ€ Arango says. โ€œBlitzenโ€™s the one reindeer who supports Vixen and believes that people should know about the โ€˜realโ€™ Santa. Sheโ€™s probably also close to Cupid and Donner because they donโ€™t hold back on their true feelings about Santa.

โ€œThereโ€™s some tension with the other reindeer because either they donโ€™t believe her story or donโ€™t want to accept the fact that Santaโ€™s capable of such deeds or know Santaโ€™s not exactly innocent, but would rather push it under the rug so that things remain normal for Christmas.โ€
