Community in Conversation: Legacy of Slavery in Savannah
Who: Telfair Museums and Savannah State University
When: Oct. 12-14
Where: Telfair Museums and SSU campus
What: These events are free and open to the public with the objective of encouraging the greater Savannah metropolitan area to engage in conversations about legacies of slavery in the community. The weekend’s program will begin with a public kickoff celebration at Savannah State University at 6 pm on Thursday Oct.12, which will include food and a live performance from the SSU Marching Band. On Friday, Oct. 13 scholars from around the country will present at Savannah State University and engage with the community about their research findings. These findings will be published as ‘Legacy of Slavery in Savannah’ to highlight the diverse legacies of slavery in our region. Presentations and Panels will be held from 10 am to 4 pm, with advance registration for this free event at https://www.telfair.org/event/community-in-conversation/.
To celebrate the conclusion of the initiative, Telfair Museums will host a Free Family Day on Saturday, October 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can enjoy free admission to all three of Telfair Museums’ sites. In addition to free admission, they will hold special programs including live local performances, engagement with community partner organizations, and curator-led tours of the art exhibitions Richmond Barthé: Harlem Renaissance Sculptor, Created Beasts: Sculpture by Ulysses Davis, and a curator-led tour of the Telfair Academy. Art activities for all ages will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. along with some delicious, cool treats provided by Savannah Square Pops. The day of fun will conclude with a family-friendly puppet parade around Telfair Square. The Great Pomegranate Jamboree
Who: Shuk Mediterranean
When: Saturday, Oct. 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m
Where: 1313 Habersham Street
What: This inaugural event will center around a diverse market of 15 local makers and artisans. Celebrations will include live music, food and drink specials, and family activities. Shuk is using this opportunity to highlight One Love Rescue – A pet rescue group based in Savannah. The charity will be on site with adoptable animals during the event. The event is free and open to the public.
Fall Open House
Who: Merchants of West Broad
When: Saturday, Oct. 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: On MLK Jr. Blvd. between W Jones and W Charlton Streets
What: Merchants of the West Broad neighborhood will host a fall fest in conjunction with Wag-O-Ween. Festivities include a band lineup at Smithereens rage room and a children’s area. Businesses will be hosting mini-seminars on topics from flower arranging and mixology to iPhone photography and stress management.
“Costumes on the Woof” Party
Who: Plant Riverside District and The Hipster Hound
When: Saturday, Oct. 21 from 5-7 p.m.
Where: Electric Moon Skytop Lounge + Moon Deck
What: Now in its third year, this canine-friendly celebration and Halloween-themed costume contest is coming soon to the Moon Deck. Don’t miss this “paw-some” Wag-O-Ween after party, which is a fun opportunity to dress your pooch in the wildest costume, win fun prizes and hang out with your favorite furry friends. The party is open to humans 21 and older and their dogs. Contest participants can sign up at Electric Moon on a first-come, first-serve basis. Winners will be determined by a panel of local judges and be awarded fantastic prizes, including gift certificates to Yappy Hour at Electric Moon, Hipster Hound gift baskets, Plant Riverside District gift bags and free cocktails at Electric Moon. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Renegade Paws Rescue.

Davenport House Museum welcomes Danielle Hodes as executive director
Historic Savannah Foundation has chosen Danielle Hodes, a museum professional with experience at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York, as the executive director of the Davenport House Museum. She assumed her new role on Sept. 11, 2023.
“The Davenport House Museum is of paramount importance to Historic Savannah Foundation, and we are delighted to have found an executive director with sterling credentials to take this important position,” said Sue Adler, CEO & President of HSF. “The Davenport House was the first of the more than 420 historic buildings – and counting – that Historic Savannah Foundation has saved, and it looms large in the origin story of our organization. Danielle Hodes is the right person to direct our stewardship of this Savannah treasure and to secure the relevance and historical integrity of its programming.”
